Art Alert: Check out these Delightful Wax & Tissue Prints by Melanie Pope
“Pure creativity is something better than a necessity; it’s a gift. It’s the frosting. Our creativity is a wild and unexpected bonus from the universe.”
– Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic; Creative Living Beyond Fear
What kind of Auntie am I? Why, a rather brilliant one, I’d say.
At the First Chance Craft Show in Sidney, BC in early November, I had the idea of placing a selection of some of the striking Wax & Tissue prints, created by my niece, Melanie Pope, on the very top of the display case on our table.
Because the visually captivating prints were then at eye-height, what this did was draw customers in to our Pink Gazelle Cards booth.
Worked like a charm 🙂
Yes, that’s right: I used the bait of my niece’s beautiful artwork to reel people in to our booth, so we could sell them all sorts of cool stuff…including her delightful prints, of course. And people loved them!
What are Wax & Tissue Prints?
Melanie is a painter and creates original paintings, often on commission. But before she sells her original painting, she takes a photo of the painting – and/or parts of the painting.
Then she chooses an image she thinks will work well as a smaller print and has it printed right onto special tissue paper.
Then a piece of Masonite board is cut to size and the face is painted white. The edges are sometimes painted a different color for different effects. The tissue paper is then carefully lined up and mounted onto the Masonite board and then hot wax is brushed over top. It’s quite the process!
When the wax dries, the finished effect is striking, partly because of the unusual texture and partly because the original artwork is outstanding.
In case you are interested in ordering a print before we head into the next craft fair (Dec 10th & 11th), here are the Wax & Tissue prints we have left:
With the exception of the slightly larger moth print, all the other prints are 4 inches x 3 inches.
The prints are $10 each or 3 for $25.
