Last Greek Island…Crete!

“It takes a lifetime to discover Greece, but it only takes an instant to fall in love with her.”

– Arthur Miller

After Naxos, Emily and I took the ferry south to the Greek island of Crete.

We arrived in Heraklion on Oct 7th, 2023 🙁

When we first arrived at our Heraklion hotel, we hadn’t heard the news yet. But when we saw a dozen or so Greek police officers standing outside our hotel – all wearing full riot gear and armed with machine guns – we knew something was up.

Then we took the bus to Chania…

No crashing waves on THIS stunning beach…a couple of hours from Chania!

Beautiful Elafonisi beach…sigh 🙂

Goodbye Chania!

To be honest, Crete was not our favourite place in Greece. We absolutely loved Elofonisi beach! But the energy in both Heraklio and Chania felt a little off…probably because of the horrific events unfolding in the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

But also possibly because we were there in October – the end of the tourist season – and there were definitely times when the usual Greek hospitality was not there. Both Emily and I felt that Crete had a different vibe than the rest of Greece…almost as if they’d had ENOUGH of visitors/tourists, thank you very much. And if that’s the case, I can’t say I blame them.
