Maryanne Pope, Board Chair of the John Petropoulos Memorial Fund, will be delivering a keynote address at the Upper Island Safety Conference in Campbell River, BC, on Tue May 31st, 2011.
Maryanne’s 90 minute presentation is entitled Officer Down; Transforming Loss into Safer Workplaces. Maryanne speaks candidly about the circumstances that led to the on-duty death of her husband, Cst John Petropoulos of the Calgary Police in September 2000. John died during the investigation of a break and enter complaint at a warehouse, after falling through a false ceiling and succumbing to brain injuries. There was no safety railing in place to warn him – or anyone else – of the danger.
At the conference, Maryanne will also be giving a breakout session along with members of local police, fire and EMS departments. This session, entitled Put Yourself in Our Boots will provide participants with tangible tips they can implement in their workplaces and on the roads to help ensure emergency responders make it home safely to their families after every shift.
