“A book must be an ice-axe to break the seas frozen inside our soul.”

– Franz Kafka

I’ll be honest with you: my creative non-fiction book, A Widow’s Awakening, is rather notorious for breaking open the frozen sea inside readers. Based on the feedback I’ve received over the years, I think it’s pretty difficult to get through the first third of the book without shedding at least a few tears.

And let me tell ya: it was no picnic experiencing the events in real life either 🙁

Thankfully, there are a few lighter moments in the book…even though it took me several years and multiple rewrites to discover them for myself.

“I just finished A Widow’s Awakening –between the tears and smiles, I am overwhelmed. My last year has been an exercise in my own grief – the deaths of my marriage and my mother within hours. There is a certain kind of hurt that cannot be explained, only felt on the cellular. Your story was as close to capturing that hollow ache as anything I’ve read.”

About A Widow’s Awakening

With over 1700 books sold, A Widow’s Awakening is touching the heart and soul of readers. The story is a candid portrayal of my journey through the first year of grief after the on-duty death of my police officer husband. The book captures the immense difficulty of accepting the unacceptable while learning to transform loss into positive change.

“What an incredibly powerful and moving book! Although I had tears in my eyes as I read each page, I think your messages are uplifting and are so important in challenging the human spirit to make our lives mean something meaningful in this world, by helping others and doing something more for society. It is so cleverly written and thought provoking. I haven’t enjoyed a book this much since I taught classic literature to high school students years ago.”

If you haven’t read A Widow’s Awakening but would like to, now might be a good time. Nina Steele of nonparents.com has chosen it as their very first book to discuss in their brand new on-line book club. Thank you, Nina!

Nonparents.com is a community for people who either through personal circumstances or by choice, do not have children.

Connecting with Nina and nonparents.com was a natural fit for me. Since I was widowed at 32, before John and I had started a family, I struggled for years to determine if motherhood was still a path I wished to travel. In the end, I decided not to become a mother – and have never looked back.
